Google Apps Has a New Look

Google Apps is getting an all-new look across all its core apps that helps you work more quickly and focus on what’s important. Most changes are cosmetic and don’t really need any explanation. But some differences are worth noting.

What’s different?

  • Easy-to-recognize icons replace text links
  • Actions appear only when you need them
  • Options are moved into drop-down menus
  • Viewing areas are more elastic, space efficient
  • There’s more white space, less clutter

New look for Gmail

Gmail is getting an all-new look that’s cleaner, more customizable, and even easier to use than before. You can switch to the new look now, or wait awhile longer and we’ll switch you automatically. Most changes don’t need any explanation. But some differences are worth noting.

The new Google Calendar features a sleeker, more streamlined design that focuses on your primary event data, showing options and other information only when you need them. Most differences don’t need any explanation. But a few changes are worth noting.

New look for Google Docs

The new Google Docs features a sleeker, more streamlined Docs List that makes it easier to focus on your primary task, showing options and extra information only when needed. Overall, things work much as before and don?t need any new explanation. But a few changes are worth noting.

A closer look at some changes…


New look for Create, Upload buttonsYou now click the big red Create button to choose the type of doc to create.

The Upload link (for uploading files to Docs) is now an icon. *

* Filter options now in Search barTo open options for filtering your Docs List?by doc type, visibility, or ownership?click the small gray arrow at the far right of the Search bar.

Sort options now in drop-down menuOptions for sorting your Docs List have been moved, too?into the Sort drop-down menu at the top-right of the list. *

* Select a doc to see its actionsTo display actions for sharing a doc, adding it to a collection, and so on, you must now select at least one doc?for example, by checking its box. When no doc is selected, these actions go away.
* Actions are now iconsIf you?re not sure what an icon does, point at it to see a pop-up description.

* Opening the Preview pane

To open the right-side preview pane, you must now select a doc you want to preview, then click its Preview button. *

Tip: To keep the pane open while previewing subsequent docs, select each doc by clicking in its row to the right of the doc title (not in the doc?s check box).


Template search removed from Search barYou used to be able to search public templates from the Doc List?s Search bar. But now you need to open the template page and perform your search there.Just click the Create button and choose From template. *
* Sharing statusA doc?s Share button has a new look. Plus you can point at it to see the doc?s current sharing status. As before, click the button to change this status.

?Publish to the web? moved to File menuYou?ll now find options such as Publish to the web and Email collaborators in a doc?s File menu. (In the classic look, you opened these options from a menu next to the Share button). *

* Go back to your Docs ListWhile working in a doc, you can now navigate back to your Docs List by clicking an arrow to the left of the doc?s title. But here?s the trick: To see the arrow, you have to point to the doc?s title.

No more Save button!Since Google Docs saves changes for you automatically, we removed the Save button.And if you want to undo a saved change? No problem. Just choose Undo from the doc?s Edit menu. *

 

 

How to try the new look…


Click the gear icon in the top right of your screen and choose Try the new look.To switch back to Google Doc?s familiar look, click the gear icon again and choose Use the classic look. *
